SURI: A physician couple from Suri put their daughter, a Class VI pupil, via the sacred thread ceremony (poite) on Wednesday following age-old traditions.The Upanayana ritual is ordinarily thought-about a male ceremony of passage, marking the acceptance of a pupil by a guru or acharya and a person’s initiation into a faculty in Vedic traditions.Basanta Banerjee and Kaushani Chatterjee, connected to 2 totally different authorities hospitals, held daughter Kairavi’s Upanayan ceremony at their ancestral home at Ramakrishna Palli in Suri within the presence of members of the family and different invitees.Kaushani defined how and when this concept germinated. “When the thread ceremony of my relative’s son was being held some time back, my daughter asked ‘why not for me’? Why don’t you take the initiative for my Upanayan too?”Initially, they had been excited and confused. “All this while, we knew that only Brahmins boys can wear this sacred thread. But after studying various scriptures and consulting experts, we were convinced that even a girl can perform this ritual. There is no bar,” she added.Basanta stated: “Our religion doesn’t differentiate between man and woman. There is no clash between science and spirituality. This is a Vedic ritual. Without some inner spirituality, you cannot succeed. Once we were convinced, I was looking for an organization that could help me. We finally decided that the ceremony would be performed by Vedic Dharma Sansthan.”Kairavi, who research in a non-public faculty in Kolkata, stated: “Upanayan means to come to a guru for attaining knowledge. To undergo the Upanayana ritual is my right.”Swami Shradhhananda, an official of Vedic Dharma Sansthan, stated: “One of the 16 samskaras is Upanayana. This 10th samaskara is a symbol of purity and both man and woman can perform this ritual. We forget our tradition and culture and misunderstand it.”
