Iran threatens Mediterranean closure over Gaza

Iran threatens Mediterranean closure over Gaza-A commander from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they might close the Mediterranean Sea if the US and friends keep doing “bad stuff” in Gaza. Iran supports Hamas against Israel and blames the US for supporting what it calls Israeli crimes in Gaza. The commander, Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Naqdi, said, “Get ready for the Mediterranean Sea and other waterways to close soon.”

In the last month, Yemen’s Houthi group, linked to Iran, attacked ships in the Red Sea because of Israel’s actions in Gaza. This made some companies change ship routes. The White House said Iran was deeply involved in planning operations against ships in the Red Sea.

Iran doesn’t have direct access to the Mediterranean, so it’s unclear how the Guards could close it. But Naqdi talked about “new powers of resistance and closing other waterways.” He said, “Yesterday, the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz scared them, and today they’re stuck in the Red Sea.”

The only groups Iran supports on the Mediterranean are Hezbollah in Lebanon and allied fighters in Syria, far from Gibraltar.
