I was trying to get in touch with him since six months, trying to speak, but there was absolutely no way I could get to him, to Naya, to Farida. I knew there was something wrong, but I was not sure what. Beautiful memories came flooding back from 1981 when I sang for Khazana at the Taj, which was done by Music India. And then our friendship went across so many concerts, so many, like we were comrades in this wonderful world of music. How many concerts I have done of Khazana for him. And besides his memories as a performing artist, he was so good with the musicians. He used to do so much for everyone, because it’s a big blow to his circle of musicians also and to the music fraternity.”Masani additional added. “It’s just that we could have met him, could have held his hand, you know. Last time I talked to him was during our Parsi New Year on August, and he was fine, he talked and then completely went incognito.”The singer additional recalled, “I remember when I celebrated my 25th birthday, he had come. I shared a photograph also, he and Farida as a young couple. And he was very sweet to me, as he also had a Parsi wife. When I turned 50, they all had come again. The fact is that we were this one group of singers who were together like Pankaj, Talat, Anoop (Jalota), me and Bhupinder Singh ji. But Pankaj was the eldest amongst us. I wish we could have known, but maybe he was a very private person. He didn’t, you know, want anybody to know. And he’s done so much for cancer patients. How much have we sung for Cancer Patients Association? Strange is the way of the world.”In the meantime, Udhas has launched greater than fifty albums and numerous compilations. He lent his voice to many Hindi movies ‘Naam’, ‘Saajan, ‘Mohra’ and plenty of extra. The final rites will reportedly be held on Tuesday. The twenty first Khazana Ghazal Competition witnesses a starry turnoutSee Extra: Music maestro Pankaj Udhas passes away at 73: Prime Minister Narendra Modi pays a heartfelt tribute to the celebrated musician
